Thayamkulangara Sree Subramanya Swami Temple, located in Cherpu, Kerala, is a revered shrine believed to be over 3,500 years old. As part of the historic Peruvanam Gramam—one of the 32 Brahmin settlements established by Lord Parasurama—the temple shares a sacred connection with the nearby Peruvanam Mahadeva Temple. Often called “Kerala Pazhani” for its spiritual parallel to Palani, the shrine has been preserved for centuries by the esteemed Chittoor Mana, safeguarding its Vedic traditions and heritage.

 

According to legend, Sage Pooru received a divine vision of Lord Subramanya as a radiant young boy holding a Vel (spear). Striking the earth, the Lord created a sacred spring to grant liberation (Sapa Moksha) to cursed celestial beings. The spot later became the temple’s spiritually powerful pond, which remains central to worship. Here, the deity is revered in Bala Bhava—the youthful form symbolizing purity, dynamic energy, and the removal of obstacles—making the temple a prominent Parihara Sthalam, especially for remedies related to Sevvai Dosham (Mars afflictions).

 

Architecturally built in the classical Vatta Sreekovil (circular sanctum) style, the temple is also deeply linked to Kerala’s ritual arts and percussion traditions, particularly during the Peruvanam Pooram circuit. The grand Thaipooyam festival, marked by vibrant Kavadiyattam, powerful Chenda Melam, and the spectacular Lakshadeepam illumination, draws thousands of devotees each year. Blending legend, devotion, and living tradition, Thayamkulangara continues to shine as a dynamic spiritual center of faith and prosperity.

 

தாயம்குளங்கர ஸ்ரீ சுப்ரமண்ய சுவாமி திருக்கோவில், கேரளாவின் சேர்புவில் அமைந்துள்ள மிகப் பழமையான தலமாகும். சுமார் 3,500 ஆண்டுகள் பழமை வாய்ந்ததாக கருதப்படும் இத்தலம், பரசுராமர் நிறுவிய 32 பிராமணக் கிராமங்களில் ஒன்றான பெருவனம் கிராமத்தின் பகுதியாக விளங்குகிறது. அருகிலுள்ள பெருவனம் மகாதேவர் கோவிலுடன் ஆன்மிகத் தொடர்பு கொண்ட இது, தமிழ்நாட்டின் பழனி முருகன் தலத்திற்கு ஒப்பாக “கேரள பழனி” என்ற பெருமை பெற்றுள்ளது. சிட்டூர் மனா குடும்பம் தலைமுறைகளாக இத்தலத்தின் வேத மரபை பாதுகாத்து வருகின்றது.

 

இத்தலத்தின் தோற்றம் முனிவர் பூருவுடன் தொடர்புடைய புராணக் கதையைக் கொண்டுள்ளது. தவம் மேற்கொண்டிருந்த முனிவருக்கு, வேல் தாங்கிய பாலக வடிவில் சுப்ரமண்யர் அருளாட்சி வழங்கினார் என நம்பப்படுகிறது. இறைவன் வேலை கொண்டு பூமியைத் தட்ட, அங்கிருந்து உருவான புனித நீரூற்று சாபமுற்ற தெய்வங்களுக்கு சாபவிமோசனம் அளித்ததாக கூறப்படுகிறது. அந்த இடமே இன்று ஆன்மிக ஆற்றல் நிறைந்த திருக்குளமாக திகழ்கிறது. இங்கு முருகன் பாலபாவத்தில் வழிபடப்படுவதால், செவ்வாய் தோஷ நிவாரணத்திற்கு சிறப்பு பெற்ற பரிகார ஸ்தலமாக இது அறியப்படுகிறது.

Dress Code (Strictly Traditional) / உடை விதிமுறை (கடுமையாக பின்பற்றவும்)

Men must wear a Mundu (Dhoti). To enter the inner sanctum area, men are traditionally required to remain bare-chested; a small upper cloth (Veshti) may be draped over the shoulder outside. Women are encouraged to wear Saree or traditional Kerala Mundu-Set. Long skirts or Salwar Kameez are generally accepted, but modern attire such as jeans, leggings, or short dresses is strictly prohibited.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the inner temple complex and Sreekovil (sanctum). Capturing images of the deity is considered a violation of temple customs.
