Shri Ilanji Kumarar Temple Tenkasi

The Shri Ilanji Kumarar Temple, situated in Ilanji village of Tenkasi district, Tamil Nadu, near the renowned tourist destination Courtallam, is an ancient and spiritually powerful Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan. With a history spanning over 1,500 years, the temple holds immense religious importance and is deeply rooted in Tamil spiritual traditions. Its glory is celebrated in the sacred Thiruppugazh hymns composed by the revered Tamil saint Arunagirinathar, highlighting the temple’s longstanding devotional legacy.

According to sacred mythology, the temple is closely associated with Sage Agastya, who journeyed to the south to restore balance to the earth during the celestial wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Upon reaching Ilanji, Agastya worshipped Lord Shiva by forming a Shiva lingam from white sand, known as Iruvalugam. This deity, worshipped as Iruvaluga Ishwar, does not receive abhishekam due to its sand form. To fulfill his divine mission of transforming Kutralam into a Shiva sthalam, Agastya prayed to Lord Murugan, who appeared before him and revealed his supreme nature as the embodiment of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Lord Murugan further instructed Agastya to proceed to Kutralam in a Vaishnava guise.

At the request of the great sages Kashyapa, Kapila, and Durvasa, Lord Murugan remained in Ilanji to impart wisdom and grant boons to devotees, earning the revered name Varadaraja Perumal. The main sanctum of the temple houses Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli and Devasena, while separate shrines enshrine Iruvaluga Ishwar (Lord Shiva) and Iruvaluga Isarkkiniyal (Goddess Parvati). Architecturally, the east-facing temple features two entrances, a three-tiered gopuram at the inner prakaram, and a vimana designed in Nagara and Vesara styles. The divine presence of both Shiva and Parvati makes the temple especially auspicious for marriage ceremonies, and devotees regularly visit seeking blessings for marriage, progeny, wisdom, and prosperity.

ஸ்ரீ இளஞ்சி குமாரர் திருக்கோவில் தமிழ்நாட்டின் தென்காசி மாவட்டத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள இளஞ்சி கிராமத்தில், புகழ்பெற்ற சுற்றுலாத்தலமான குற்றாலத்துக்கு அருகே அமைந்துள்ள ஒரு பழமைவாய்ந்த மற்றும் ஆன்மிக மகத்துவம் கொண்ட திருத்தலமாகும். 1500 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேற்பட்ட வரலாற்றைக் கொண்ட இத்தலம், திருப்புகழ் அருளிய மகான் அருணகிரிநாதர் அவர்களால் போற்றப்பட்ட சிறப்பு பெற்ற தலமாக விளங்குகிறது. இந்த ஆலயம், தமிழர் ஆன்மிக மரபும் பக்தி இலக்கியங்களும் ஒன்றிணையும் தலமாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது.

புராண வரலாற்றின்படி, சிவபெருமான் – பார்வதி தேவியாரின் திருக்கல்யாணத்தின்போது பூமி சமநிலையை இழந்ததால், அந்த சமநிலையைப் பேண அகத்திய முனிவரை தென்னாட்டிற்கு அனுப்பினார். இளஞ்சியில் சித்ரா நதிக்கரையில் அகத்தியர் வெள்ளை மணலில் (இருவளுகம்) சிவலிங்கம் செய்து வழிபட்டார். அந்த இறைவன் இருவளுக ஈஸ்வரர் என அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்; மணலால் உருவான லிங்கமாக இருப்பதால் இங்கு அபிஷேகம் செய்யப்படுவதில்லை. பின்னர் குற்றாலத்தை சிவஸ்தலமாக மாற்ற அகத்தியர் முருகப் பெருமானை வேண்ட, முருகன் தன் திருவடிவில் தோன்றி, பிரம்மா–விஷ்ணு–சிவன் ஆகிய மூவரின் தத்துவமும் தாமே என அருளி, வைஷ்ணவ வேடத்தில் குற்றாலம் செல்லுமாறு அருளினார். காச்யபர், கபிலர், துர்வாசர் ஆகிய முனிவர்களின் வேண்டுகோளுக்கிணங்க இளஞ்சியில் தங்கிய முருகன், பக்தர்களுக்கு அருள்பாலித்து வரதராஜ பெருமாள் எனவும் போற்றப்படுகிறார். இக்கோவிலில் மூலவராக வள்ளி–தெய்வானையுடன் முருகப்பெருமான், மேலும் இருவளுக ஈஸ்வரர், இருவளுக ஈஸர்க்கினியாள் தனித்த சன்னதிகளில் அருள்பாலிக்கின்றனர். சிவ–பார்வதி இருவரும் அருள்பாலிக்கும் சிறப்பு காரணமாக, திருமண தோஷ நிவாரணத்திற்கும், சந்தான பாக்கியத்திற்கும் இத்தலம் மிகச் சிறந்ததாக கருதப்படுகிறது.
