The origins of the temple trace back to the era of Chola King Kulottunga I (1070-1122 A.D.), who assigned Karunakara Thondaiman the task of overseeing the region’s salt procurement. The community that flourished around the Thondaimanaru Aru stream soon established this temple as their spiritual center. Despite facing destruction by foreign invaders in the 16th century, the temple was revitalized during a Hindu resurgence in Jaffna, reinstating its status as a cornerstone of local culture and spirituality.
