Kumaran Kundram Temple is a small hill shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan located in Chromepet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity, Sri Swaminathaswamy, stands facing north atop the hillock and is considered spiritually equivalent to the deity at Swamimalai Temple. Devotees can reach the temple by climbing about 80 steps from the base of the hill.

 

The temple’s origin dates back to 1956 when Chandrashekarendra Saraswati Swamigal, the revered sage of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, visited Chromepet and suggested building a Murugan temple on the hill. During the clearing of the hill path about two decades later, a sacred Vel (the spear of Lord Murugan) was discovered, inspiring devotees to complete the temple. The temple’s Kumbhabhishekam was performed in 1979, and later shrines for Shiva, Ambal, Sharabheshvara, and the Navagrahas were added.

 

Today, Kumaran Kundram Temple is an important spiritual center for Murugan devotees in Chennai. Monthly Pournami Girivalam around the hill attracts many devotees, while major festivals such as Soorasamharam and Karthigai Deepam are celebrated with great devotion. The temple is managed by a board of trustees with the support of dedicated volunteers.
