Kandhamalai Murugan Temple

The sacred Kandhamalai Murugan Temple is a revered hill shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan, located near the town of Mohanur on the banks of the sacred Kaveri River. Surrounded by natural beauty and peaceful landscapes, the temple has long been a spiritual center for Murugan devotees in the region. The temple is situated on a small hill known as Kandhamalai, and devotees climb a series of steps to reach the sanctum, symbolizing a spiritual journey toward divine grace.

The history of the temple is deeply connected with local devotion and faith in Lord Murugan, also worshipped as Balasubramaniar. According to traditional accounts passed down by elders of the region, the temple’s origin is believed to date back to the early 18th century, around the year 1700 CE. During that period, the hill was considered sacred, and devotees often worshipped a Vel (the divine spear of Murugan) placed on the hilltop. Over time, the growing devotion of the people led to the establishment of a small shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan.

One of the most interesting aspects of the temple’s history is its connection with the simple faith of the villagers of Mohanur. It is said that shepherds and farmers who lived near the hill frequently prayed to the Vel seeking protection for their livestock, crops, and families. Many devotees believed that their prayers were answered, which strengthened the belief that the hill was blessed by Murugan’s divine presence. Gradually, the small shrine evolved into a proper temple structure with a sanctum, mandapam, and steps leading up the hill. The temple also includes smaller shrines for deities such as Lord Ganesha and Idumban, who are traditionally associated with Murugan worship. In recent decades, the temple underwent renovation and improvement works supported by devotees and temple authorities. A Kumbabishekam (consecration ceremony) was also conducted to spiritually renew the temple structure and enhance the sacred atmosphere of the shrine.

Today, Kandhamalai Murugan Temple stands as an important devotional center in the Namakkal region. Devotees visit especially during auspicious days such as Krittikai, Sashti, and Thai Poosam, seeking the blessings of Lord Murugan for courage, wisdom, prosperity, and spiritual progress. The temple continues to preserve its historical roots while serving as a vibrant place of faith and devotion for thousands of devotees every year.
