Arulmigu Shri Kalugusalamoorthy Murugan Temple is a serene hilltop shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan, located in Kalugumalai (Kazhugumalai), Thoothukudi District, Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity, Shri Kalugusalamoorthy, stands atop the hill, blessing devotees with wisdom, courage, and spiritual grace. Devotees can reach the temple by climbing the hill, offering both physical and spiritual ascent.

The temple’s origin traces back to the guidance of devoted sages and local devotees who recognized the sanctity of Kalugumalai. During the temple’s establishment, a sacred Vel (Lord Murugan’s divine spear) was discovered, inspiring the construction of the hilltop shrine. Over time, additional shrines for Shiva, Ambal, Sharabheshvara, and the Navagrahas were added, making the temple a complete spiritual center.

The name “Kalugusalamoorthy” is unique to this region and is derived from Tamil roots that signify “The Lord who bestows a Clear Mind” or “The Pure One who Removes Sins.” This form of Murugan is depicted as a benevolent king and teacher, unlike many hill temples where he appears as a renounced ascetic. Devotees believe that standing before this deity washes away mental confusion and brings instant clarity.

Ancient lore suggests that the hills around Kalugumalai were once dry and barren. Sage Durvasa performed penance here, and pleased with his devotion, Lord Murugan appeared, transforming the rocky hill into a lush green landscape overnight. The hill became known as Pachaimalai (Green Hill), and the temple’s divine energy is said to have contributed to the fertility of the region through local canals (Vaikaal).

While the legend is ancient, the temple’s modern structure is credited to the efforts of devotees, especially Shantalinga Ramaswamy Adigal, who renovated the shrine and introduced the Thanga Ther (Golden Chariot). Today, Arulmigu Shri Kalugusalamoorthy Murugan Temple is a major pilgrimage site, with festivals like Thai Poosam, Panguni Uthiram, and Skanda Sashti celebrated with great devotion. The temple is managed by trustees and supported by dedicated volunteers, preserving its spiritual and cultural legacy.

பழமையான கதைப்படி, காழுகுமலை சுற்றிய மலைகள் ஒருபோதும் வறண்ட, உலர் நிலையாக இருந்ததாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது. முனிவர் துர்வாசர் இங்கு தபஸ்யைச் செய்தார், அவரது பக்தியை பூர்த்தி செய்த முருகப்பெருமானார் தோன்றியதும், வெறுமை மலை சிறிது நேரத்திலேயே பசுமை மலைவாக மாறியது. மலை பசுமையானது என “பச்சைமலை” என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டது. கோவிலின் புனித சக்தி இந்தப் பகுதியில் நீர்வளத்தைச் சேமிக்க உதவியது என்றும் கூறப்படுகிறது.
