Arulmigu Sivasubramaniyar Temple Gurusamipalayam

The Arulmigu Sivasubramaniyar Temple in Gurusamipalayam, Pillanallur, has a history rooted in the ancient Sangam period, dating back over 1,000 years. According to the Sthala Purana, the temple’s origins are tied to Veerabagu, the commander-in-chief of Lord Muruga’s army, who is said to have worshipped an idol of the Lord at this specific location. It is believed that his subsequent generations built a permanent structure to continue the regular worship, leading to the establishment of the temple as a prominent spiritual hub for the Sengunthar community.

Legend also links this site to several significant figures and historical events. It is said that Sage Suka Muni (the “king of parrots”) once worshipped here, and the famed poetess Avvaiyar is believed to have performed miracles on the grounds. Historical accounts suggest the temple was so significant that the monarchs of the Chera, Chola, and Pandya kingdoms visited the shrine simultaneously to attend the wedding of Avvaiyar’s adopted daughter. The Saivite Saint poets also sang of its glory, further cementing its place in Tamil Nadu’s religious heritage.

A unique feature of this temple’s history is its “miracle-based” reputation and the presence of two presiding deities: Lord Sivasubramania and Lord Baladandayuthapani. Local lore recounts a notable event from roughly 100 years ago when a thief attempted to steal jewels from the idol; the story goes that he was immediately struck with blindness upon touching the deity, an event that significantly boosted the temple’s fame for divine power. Today, it remains a vital pilgrimage site where devotees seek blessings for marriage and agricultural prosperity through traditional rituals like Annadhana.

இந்தத் திருத்தலம் பல புராணக் கதைகளும், வரலாற்றுச் சம்பவங்களும் இணைந்த இடமாகும். “கிளிகளின் அரசன்” என அழைக்கப்படும் சுக முனிவர் இங்கு வழிபட்டதாகவும், புகழ்பெற்ற தமிழ்க் கவிஞர் அவ்வையார் இத்தலத்தில் பல அதிசயங்களை நிகழ்த்தியதாகவும் கூறப்படுகிறது. மேலும், சேர, சோழ, பாண்டிய மன்னர்கள் ஒரே சமயத்தில் இத்தலத்திற்கு வந்து அவ்வையாரின் தத்தெடுத்த மகளின் திருமணத்தில் கலந்துகொண்டதாகும் ஒரு சிறப்பு வரலாறு கூறப்படுகிறது. சைவ நாயன்மார்கள் இந்தத் தலத்தின் மகிமையைப் பாடியுள்ளனர் என்பது இதன் ஆன்மிக முக்கியத்துவத்தை மேலும் உயர்த்துகிறது.

இந்தக் கோவிலின் தனிச்சிறப்பாக, அதிசய சக்தியுடன் விளங்கும் திருத்தலமாகவும், இரு பிரதான மூர்த்திகள் – சிவசுப்பிரமணியர் மற்றும் பாலதண்டாயுதபாணி – ஆகியோர் அருள்பாலிக்கும் இடமாகவும் உள்ளது. சுமார் 100 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு, கோவில் நகைகளை திருட முயன்ற ஒருவருக்கு உடனே குருட்டுத்தனம் ஏற்பட்டதாக கூறப்படும் சம்பவம், இந்தத் தலத்தின் தெய்வீக சக்தியை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது.
