In this vision, Lord Murugan indicated the exact spot where ancient idols were buried, leading to their excavation and the subsequent construction of the shrine to house these sacred deities.

 

A unique feature of this temple is its connection to the celestial marriage of Lord Murugan and Deivanai. According to the Puranas, after the wedding, Lord Indra gifted his divine white elephant, Iravatham, to Murugan. To commemorate this event, the temple features a rare Elephant Vahana (vehicle) installed in front of the main sanctum instead of the traditional peacock, a rare architectural distinction among Murugan temples.

 

The temple is historically revered as “Pini Theerkkum Kumaran” (the Murugan who cures diseases). This reputation stems from the story of a guard named Alagumuthu, who suffered from a severe skin ailment. After devoutly praying to the deity here, he was miraculously cured.
