The Veliagaram Thiruppugazh Temple, situated in the Tiruvallur district, holds a history that seamlessly weaves together ancient stone architecture and medieval Tamil literature. While the temple is widely celebrated today as a site dedicated to Lord Muruga, its foundational roots are deeply anchored in the worship of Lord Shiva as Prithvi Eswarar. The site is located on the serene banks of the Kosasthalaiyar River, a region historically known as Tondaimandalam, which served as a major cultural and spiritual corridor between the Andhra and Tamil regions. This geographical placement made the temple a vital landmark for travelers and scholars for over a millennium.

The most compelling physical evidence of the temple’s antiquity is the presence of a rare 16-striped Dhara Lingam in the main sanctum. This intricate style of craftsmanship is a hallmark of the late Pallava and early Chola architectural transition, dating the primary stone structures to approximately the 9th or 10th century. Unlike a standard smooth Lingam, the vertical flutings of the Dhara Lingam are designed so that ritual offerings like milk and water flow through sixteen distinct channels, symbolizing the multiplication of divine energy. This architectural rarity suggests that the temple was once a significant center for specialized Agamic worship and high-level lithic art.

A transformative chapter in the temple’s history occurred in the 15th century during the visit of the legendary saint-poet Arunagirinathar. During his extensive pilgrimage, he was captivated by the beauty of the Murugan deity here—uniquely depicted with one face and four hands—and composed a sacred hymn in the Thiruppugazh canon. By immortalizing the temple in his complex rhythmic verses, he elevated Veliagaram to the status of a Thiruppugazh Sthalam, ensuring its name would be preserved in Tamil literary history forever. This visit shifted the popular focus of the temple from a local Shiva shrine to a major pilgrimage destination for Murugan devotees across South India.

Over the centuries, the temple has functioned as a resilient “Ghat” temple, surviving the ebb and flow of the Kosasthalaiyar River and the shifting patronage of various South Indian dynasties. During the Vijayanagara and Nayaka periods, local chieftains likely maintained the structures, as evidenced by the traditional styles of the peripheral shrines and the preservation of the central idols. In modern times, the local community has taken great care to restore the temple, even establishing a dedicated shrine for Saint Arunagirinathar. This act of reverence acknowledges that while the stone was carved by ancient masons, it was the saint’s poetry that granted the temple its enduring spiritual fame and historical identity.
