Over 1,200 years ago, the village of Vellimalai was covered with dense forests. At that time, a sage lived in a cave atop the hill, known for his divine powers that could heal the sick. People from far and wide would flock to see him. One day, the sage mysteriously ascended to the hilltop and disappeared, and locals began to believe he was an incarnation of God. The sacred temple tree here is the Vepalai tree.

The temple is beautifully built atop the Vellimalai hill, facing east. The gopuram above the sanctum offers a captivating view. At the entrance, the Siddhi Vinayaka shrine welcomes devotees.

The main deity, Lord Murugan, is sculpted in his youthful form, with a gentle smile and serene gaze. His enchanting presence draws devotees into a divine trance, making them feel immersed in the heavenly bliss of the omnipotent Lord Murugan. Devotees say that no other Murugan deity in the district matches the magical charm of this hilltop shrine.

Lord Murugan, by showering his grace without discrimination, ensures that any prayer or wish made at this sacred temple removes obstacles and brings happiness. Those suffering from illnesses are believed to experience significant relief by staying here for a few days. A visit to this hill temple is said to reduce mental stress and worries, offering peace and spiritual solace.

The last Friday of every Tamil month is considered a sacred day, and kanji (a type of porridge) is offered as prasadam. The temple’s major festival is Kanda Sashti, which is celebrated with great devotion. It is believed that pregnant women who pray at this temple will be blessed with healthy children. On auspicious days like Amavasai (new moon) and Vaikasi Visakam, devotees take a holy dip in the temple tank and recite the Sashti Kavacham. It is believed that by doing so, those who are childless will be blessed with children, and those in debt will be freed from financial troubles, according to ancient traditions. A special feature of the temple is that on the 10th day of Chithirai month, the sunlight falls on Lord Murugan’s feet, an incredible phenomenon that occurs every year.

1,200 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு வெள்ளிமலை கிராமம் அடர்ந்த காடுகளால் சூழப்பட்டிருந்தது. அப்போது மலை உச்சியில் உள்ள குகையில் தெய்வீக சக்தி கொண்ட ஒரு முனிவர் தங்கியிருந்தார். நோய்களை குணப்படுத்தும் அருள் பெற்றவராக அவர் அறியப்பட்டதால், தூரத் தூரமாக இருந்து மக்கள் அவரை தரிசிக்க வந்தனர். ஒருநாள் அவர் மலை உச்சிக்குச் சென்று மறைந்தார். இதனால் அவர் இறைவனின் அவதாரம் என ஊரார் நம்பினர். இத்தலத்தின் ஸ்தலவிருட்சம் வேப்பாலை மரமாகும்.

வெள்ளிமலை மேல் கிழக்கை நோக்கி அமைந்துள்ள இந்த ஆலயம் அழகாக கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. கருவறையின் மேல் எழுந்திருக்கும் கோபுரம் கண்கவர் தோற்றம் அளிக்கிறது. ஆலய நுழைவாயிலில் சித்தி விநாயகர் சந்நிதி பக்தர்களை வரவேற்கிறது.

மூலவராக அருள்பாலிக்கும் முருகப்பெருமான் இளமையான வடிவில், இனிய புன்னகையுடன், அமைதியான திருக்கண்ணோட்டத்துடன் காட்சி தருகிறார். அவரின் தெய்வீக அழகு பக்தர்களை ஆனந்த நிலைக்கு இட்டுச் செல்கிறது. மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள வேறு எந்த முருகன் ஆலயத்துடனும் ஒப்பிட முடியாத தனித்துவம் இத்தலத்துக்கு உண்டு என்று பக்தர்கள் கூறுகின்றனர்.

இங்கு மனமார வேண்டினால் தடைகள் நீங்கி, வாழ்வில் மகிழ்ச்சி பெருகும் என நம்பப்படுகிறது. நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் சில நாட்கள் தங்கி வழிபட்டால் உடல் நலன் மேம்படும் என்றும், மனஅழுத்தம் மற்றும் கவலைகள் நீங்கி ஆன்மீக அமைதி கிடைக்கும் என்றும் பக்தர்கள் அனுபவமாக கூறுகின்றனர்.

ஒவ்வொரு தமிழ் மாதத்தின் கடைசி வெள்ளிக்கிழமையும் புனித நாளாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. அன்று கஞ்சி பிரசாதமாக வழங்கப்படுகிறது. இத்தலத்தின் முக்கிய திருவிழா கந்த சஷ்டி ஆகும்; இது மிகுந்த பக்தி உணர்வுடன் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. கர்ப்பிணிப் பெண்கள் இங்கு பிரார்த்தனை செய்தால் ஆரோக்கியமான குழந்தை பிறக்கும் என நம்பப்படுகிறது.

அமாவாசை மற்றும் வைகாசி விசாகம் போன்ற சிறப்பு நாட்களில், பக்தர்கள் ஆலயத் தீர்த்தத்தில் புனித நீராடி சஷ்டி கவசம் பாராயணம் செய்கின்றனர். இவ்வாறு செய்தால் சந்தானப்பேறு கிடைக்கும், கடன் சுமைகள் நீங்கும் என்று புராண நம்பிக்கை நிலவுகிறது.

மேலும், சித்திரை மாதம் 10ஆம் நாளில் சூரிய ஒளி நேராக முருகப்பெருமானின் திருவடிகளில் விழும் அதிசய நிகழ்வு ஆண்டுதோறும் நடைபெறுகிறது. இது இத்தலத்தின் சிறப்பு மகிமைகளில் ஒன்றாகும்.
