The Arulmigu Thiru Kumaramalai Baladhandayuthapani Murugan Temple, situated near Pudukkottai in Tamil Nadu, is a revered hill temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, celebrated for its unique iconography, powerful legends, and strong belief in healing and wish fulfillment. The temple is often regarded as spiritually equivalent to the famous Palani Murugan Temple, especially by devotees who are unable to undertake the long pilgrimage to Palani.

The origin of the temple is closely associated with a deeply moving local legend. An 80-year-old devotee named Sethupathi, who had faithfully carried Kavadi to Palani every year, found himself physically unable to continue the arduous journey due to old age. Touched by his unwavering devotion, Lord Murugan appeared in his dream and instructed him to worship at Kumaramalai hill instead. The Lord revealed that He would manifest at a specific spot on the hill marked by sacred items—vibhuti (sacred ash), a rudraksha garland, a prambu (cane staff), and a lemon. Sethupathi later discovered the items exactly as described, planted a Vel (divine spear) at that sacred spot, and began worship. This divine event eventually led to the construction of a permanent temple by the Pallavarayas in the late 19th century.

Architecturally and iconographically, the temple draws inspiration from the Palani Murugan Temple but stands apart with its distinctive features. The presiding deity, Bala Dandayuthapani, is depicted standing with his hands hanging naturally by his sides, unlike the Palani idol where Murugan rests his hands on his hips in an ascetic posture. The idol also bears a kudumi (tuft of hair), resembling a Brahmin appearance, in contrast to the tonsured form seen at Palani. The west-facing hill shrine includes a Dhwajasthambam (flagstaff), Bali Peetham, and a Mayura Mandapam (peacock enclosure), along with sub-shrines for Navagraham and Ayyappan.

A separate pathway from the temple leads to the sacred Sangu Sunai Teertham, a holy spring whose waters are believed to possess powerful curative properties, especially for chronic and long-standing illnesses.

The temple is particularly renowned for its rituals and folk beliefs associated with healing and blessings. Devotees strongly believe that prayers offered here can cure rheumatic ailments and paralysis-like conditions. Those who recover often express their gratitude by drawing or engraving footprints on the hill steps as a symbolic offering. Women seeking safe and easy childbirth offer glass bangles to the Vel placed in the Artha Mandapam, praying for divine protection and blessings.

Major festivals such as Vaikasi Visakam, Skanda Sashti, Karthikai Deepam, Thaipusam, and Panguni Uthiram are celebrated with great devotion and attract large numbers of devotees every year.

அருள்புரிந்ததுபோலவே, சேதுபதி அந்த இடத்தில் கூறிய அனைத்துப் பொருட்களையும் கண்டுபிடித்து, அங்கு வேல் நாட்டி வழிபாட்டைத் தொடங்கினார். காலப்போக்கில் அந்த இடம் பெரும் புனிதத் தலமாக விளங்கத் தொடங்கி, 19ஆம் நூற்றாண்டின் இறுதியில் பல்லவராயர்களால் இத்திருத்தலம் கட்டமைக்கப்பட்டது.

வடிவமைப்பு மற்றும் தெய்வத் தோற்றத்தில், இந்த ஆலயம் பழனி முருகன் கோவிலின் அமைப்பை ஒத்திருந்தாலும், பல தனித்துவ அம்சங்களை கொண்டுள்ளது. இங்கு அருள்பாலிக்கும் பால தண்டாயுதபாணி சுவாமி, பழனியில் காணப்படும் துறவுக் கோலத்திற்கு மாறாக, கைகள் இருபுறமும் தாழ்வாகத் தொங்கிய நிலையில் அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். மேலும், சிலை குடுமி (சிகை) உடன் காணப்படுவது ஒரு முக்கிய சிறப்பாகும்; இது பழனியில் காணப்படும் மொட்டைத் தலை வடிவத்திலிருந்து மாறுபட்டதாகும். மேற்கு நோக்கிய இந்த மலைக் கோவிலில் துவஜஸ்தம்பம், பலிபீடம், மயூர மண்டபம் ஆகியவை அமைந்துள்ளதுடன், நவகிரகங்கள் மற்றும் ஐயப்பன் ஆகியோருக்கான தனிச்சன்னதிகளும் உள்ளன.

கோவிலில் இருந்து தனிப்பாதை வழியாகச் செல்லும் சங்கு சுனை தீர்த்தம் மிகுந்த புனிதத்தைக் கொண்டதாக நம்பப்படுகிறது. இந்த தீர்த்தத்தின் நீர் நீண்டகால நோய்கள் மற்றும் உடல் குறைபாடுகளை குணப்படுத்தும் சக்தி கொண்டது என பக்தர்கள் உறுதியாக நம்புகின்றனர்.
