Vattamalai Murugan Temple Kangayam

The Vattamalai Murugan Temple, also known as the Arulmigu Muthukumaraswamy Temple, is an ancient and revered hill temple located near Kangayam in the Tiruppur district of Tamil Nadu. Situated about 8 km from Kangayam on the Kangayam–Palani road, the temple stands majestically on a small hill, making it a prominent landmark visible from afar.

Dedicated to Lord Muruga as Muthukumaraswamy, the temple features a captivating four-armed idol accompanied by His divine consorts, Valli and Devasena. The deity’s posture—holding a trident, Shatkona, Angusa, and showing the Abhaya Hastha—symbolizes protection and spiritual upliftment.

Believed to be over 1300 years old, the temple is said to have been built by the Kongu Cholas or Pandyas. Originally a Shiva temple, it became dedicated to Muruga after a major consecration in 1949. The hill was once called Konganagiri, as the great Siddhar Kongana Siddhar meditated here. The saint-poet Arunagirinathar also visited the shrine and glorified it in his sacred Thiruppugazh hymns.

The temple complex is simple yet spiritually rich, with around 100 steps leading to the sanctum. Separate shrines for Murugan, Valli, and Devasena, along with beautifully sculpted pillars in the Mahamandapam, reflect its heritage and architectural elegance. At the foothills lies the sacred Saravana Theertham, a perennial freshwater spring believed to have formed by divine lightning, offering sweet, pure water to devotees.

வட்டமலை முருகன் கோவில், அருள்மிகு முத்துக்குமாரசுவாமி திருக்கோவில் எனவும் அறியப்படும் இத்தீர்த்தஸ்தலம், திருப்பூர் மாவட்டம், காங்கயத்திற்குப் பக்கமாக உள்ள வரலாற்றுச் சிறப்புமிக்க மலைக்கோவில் ஆகும். காங்கயம்–பலனி சாலையில், காங்கயத்திலிருந்து சுமார் 8 கி.மீ தூரத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள இந்தக் கோவில், தூரத்திலிருந்தே தென்படும் முக்கிய ஆன்மிகச் சின்னமாக திகழ்கிறது.

இந்தக் கோவிலின் முதன்மை தெய்வம் அருள்புரியும் முருகப்பெருமான் (முத்துக்குமாரசுவாமி). திருச்சின்னத்தில் எழுந்திருக்கும் நான்கு கரங்கள் கொண்ட அழகிய, சிரித்தொழுகும் வடிவம் திரிசூலம், ஷட்கோணம், அங்குசம் ஆகியவற்றைத் தாங்கி, அசைவில்லா அபயஹஸ்த முத்திரையால் பக்தர்களுக்கு பாதுகாப்பும் அருளும் வழங்குகிறது. வள்ளி–தேவயானையம்மனுடன் இங்கு அருள்பாலிக்கின்றார்.

சுமார் 1300 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையான இந்தக் கோவில் காங்கு சோழர்கள் அல்லது பாண்டியர்களால் கட்டப்பட்டதாக நம்பப்படுகிறது. வரலாற்றில் இது முதலில் சிவன் கோவிலாக இருந்து வந்தது; பின்னர் 1949 ஆம் ஆண்டு நடைபெற்ற குடமுழுக்கு விழாவுக்குப் பிறகு முருகப் பெருமான் பிரதான தெய்வமாக அமைக்கப்பட்டார். மலை ‘கொங்கனகிரி’ எனப் பெயர்பெற்றது, ஏனெனில் மகா சித்தர் கொங்கண சித்தர் இம்மலையில் தியானம் செய்து தவம் இருந்ததாகும். 15ஆம் நூற்றாண்டின் திருப்புகழ் பாடல்களில் அருணகிரிநாதர் இத்தலத்தைப் பாடலும் புகழ்ந்துள்ளார்.

சுமார் 100 படிகள் கொண்ட இம்மலைக்கோவிலில், முருகன், வள்ளி, தேவயானை ஆகியோருக்குத் தனித்தனி சன்னதிகள் உள்ளன. மகாமண்டபத்தில் சிவன், பார்வதி, விஷ்ணு, அனுமன் போன்ற தெய்வங்களின் அழகிய சிற்பங்கள் செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. மலையடிவாரத்தில் உள்ள ‘சரவண தீர்த்தம்’ எனப்படும் புனித ஊற்று இடைவிடாது ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் இனிய நீருக்காகப் புகழ்பெற்றது; இது தெய்வீக மின்னலால் உருவானது எனக் கூறப்படுகிறது.
